Massachusetts makes up 90 miles of the AT. Estimating a 5 day hike to complete the trail. Like Vermont, it will be a lot of relatively easy ups and downs, with a few respectable climbs.
I found this sign noteworthy due to the mentioning of the Mohican people. My only reference to this tribe is like most others, the book by James Cooper. The setting for The Last of the Mohicans is Lake George, N.Y., which is about 90 miles away.
Our first panoramic view of Massachusetts, heading southbound.
Love everything about this. The color, the shape and texture.
I almost missed this. Late season blooms, and a great indigo color.
You are hiking well away from any type of population center, and you come across the ancient looking, concrete structure. It looks like a spillway of some type.
All these markers we see are tracking the miles completed for Northbound hikers. SOBOs occasionally see a less glamour marker, but most of the time you have to do math.
Here the trail enters the town of North Adams, MA. The trail goes right down the driveway of this home. What is not seen is the home owners have provided a water outlet and hose dedicated to AT hikers. Just another type of trail magic.
AT hikers are certainly welcome in North Adams.
I don’t think the steepness of this trail translates well in this photo, but we are looking at an extremely vertical trail. This is one of those sporadic intense climbs we see in Massachusetts.
I feel that if you take a minute, and think about it, you can make most pictures interesting. Granted I’m biased, they’re my pictures.
Views from the Mount Greylock ascent.
This is the Mount Greylock Lighthouse Veterans War Monument, built in 1933. From up here you can see Vermont, New York and Connecticut. Mount Greylock is Massachusetts hugest point.
Why is Warrior Princess’s pack lopsided? It’s because she’s hauling a 1 lb STEAK 🥩 !! A trail angel provided the pups a steak for their dinner. Massachusetts is turning out to be a great steak, I mean state so far.
The Steak.
Impressive elevated AT trail. Kudos to the local trail clubs for constructing this.
Well, hello beautiful.
Well that’s it for Massachusetts. A nice, scenic AT section.
