Days 125-129, July 15th – July 19th (Kinsman Notch, NH to Mount Washington summit, mile 1864)

This will be our last section in NH for a bit. After Mount Washington, we will head back to Maine to move into our home in Brunswick, Maine. We will be in Maine for a minimum of 10 months.

Starting this section at Beaver Pond. I took some time here to paint. It was an inspiring setting.

At this point, we are heavily entrenched in the White Mountains. Many lists of the most challenging AT sections have the White Mountains near or at the top. I believe it. Even my short sections of hiking are very steep and strenuous. Adding the thick humidity to the mix makes for difficult hiking.

Here are a couple of examples of how steep the descents and assents can be. Ladders of some sort have been enstalled.

Flowers have all but disappeared, but mushrooms of many varieties are plentiful

Even with all this steep climbing, there is a lot of water available. Creeks, ponds and lakes pop up regularly. Warrior Princess and CornDog enjoying a soak.

Ridge hiking is THE BEST! Granted, it’s a lot of work getting there, but the payoff. It’s cooler, less humidity, and no bugs. And astounding views.

Check this sign out. The message is so ominous, but printed on cheery, bright yellow.

Passed these AT hikers on the flank of Mount Washington. It was quite chilly, so they pulled out their bags during their break.

It’s Rockstar! We haven’t seen him since Virginia. Really good to see him. If I remember correctly, he’s from NH, so he’s close to home. We have a few other photos of him from earlier in the hike. He’s a traveling musician, hiking with his guitar.

Warrior Princess, WaterBoy and CornDog (looking back at me) on the Mount Washington summit. The elevation of Washington is 6288 ft.

Instead of climbing Mt Washington, WaterBoy was taken to the summit, and then hiked down. The drive up was 65.00, and I thought that was crazy outrageous. I changed my mind once we started driving up. It’s hard to describe, other than it was worth every dime.
