Due to some remnants of Hurricane Beryl that’s made it up to Maine, we’ve decided to head to New Hampshire to start hiking north. Hiking Northeast from Hanover, and will close the gap with WaterBoy’s completed Maine miles.
Another advantage to hiking this area is the numerous trailheads accessing the AT. This allows for frequent slack-packing days.
My friend Sue Ellen Mischke-Bunker, from Hester, Louisiana, has a thing for New England steepled churches. She’s requested photos whenever we come across an interesting one. I thought I’d share some that were near the AT in New Hampshire.
Look who I ran into. It’s “Quirk”, a sweet fella from South Carolina. I haven’t seen him since northern Georgia, where he stopped and visited at my sandwich trail magic tent. We are starting to run into more hikers we saw and hiked with at the beginning of this adventure. WaterBoy has already run into Shamrock and Flip Flop, both last seen in Virginia.
Two new hikers were seeing regularly (and I need to snap a photo) are Bagel and Smokey, from Colorado. It seems like we see them every day on the trail. Nice couple from Evergreen, Colorado.
A nice marble AT marker, but the 1730 mile indicated is way off. I was at roughly the 1773 mile point. We know the trail has moved over time, and this has impacted the mileage somewhat, but had no idea it varied to this extent.
Along the trail, you pass the Dartmouth Skyway, a smallish ski area. I’m assuming the pond is used for winter snow making.
I recall from past trips to Massachusetts coming across these old settlement ruins. This is the first foundation I’ve seen so far, but many, many stone fences have been passed.
A New Hampshire hikers hut. This is the Jeffer’s Brook Shelter, constructed by the Dartmouth Cabin and Trail club. We’re about 50 trail miles from Dartmouth, and their presence is still frequently seen.
There are several AT trailheads within 30-40 miles of Kinsman Notch, and a convenient resupply point in Lincoln, New Hampshire. We’ve certainly made use of the various facilities here. This place is a tourist hotspot.
I guess Lincoln has a bit of a UFO connection. This would be worth looking into.
