Today we started atop Springer Mountain. The marker is the official starting point. It was a pretty uneventful day of hiking. A lot of elevation gain and loss, Lots of water along the trail. A great first day.
The Georgia section of the AT has fairly regularly spaced shelters and pit toilets along the trail. You are free to bed down in the shelter if space is available, or sleep out in the open or in your tent. No charge and no reservations.
