Day 33-April 12th ( Cherokee National Forest and Watauga Dam)

Today was dedicated to hiking around parts of Watauga Lake, exploring the dam (mile 432) and moving on through Cherokee NP.

As we move deeper into April, every day we see more color and more spring growth. You still need to be paying attention, because easy to walk right on past it.

So far hiking in the green tunnel has been pretty nice , but having some variety is appreciated. You occasionally hike small bits of road, over rustic bridges, and today you’re gifted a dam crossing. This is the Watauga Dam. The building of the dam and the subsequent reservoir has a history, which includes a displaced town. Click on the link to learn more.

Watauga Dam
Huge spillway, or runoff

Very little wild life has been seen so far, but we found this guy today, and followed him back to his den.

Say hello to our little…marmot.

We’re finishing up our last few miles in TN/NC. I’ve found it futile trying to keep track which of the two states I’m in at any moment, as the AT frequently crosses the state line. Regardless, we will be in Virginia soon.
