Days 73-75, May 22nd-24th ( Leaving Virginia, arriving Harper’s Ferry, WV, mile 1026.7)

In this section of hiking WaterBoy, CornDog and Warrior Princess passed the 1000 mile mark, as well as crossing into West Virginia. West Virginia is state number 5. Nine states left.

A very interesting looking fungus along the trail. It’s called White (or pale) Jelly Roll fungus. Not edible.

The Rollercoaster is a 14 mile section of trail, consisting of steep accents and descents. It’s very steep and quite rocky. It’s a beast 🦁🐯. Below is a display of the rollercoaster from the FarOut app.

I came across this near the rollercoaster in N. Virginia. I believe it’s called a Skullcap (Scutellaria incana).

There’s nothing really unique about this shelter, that I know of. I just enjoyed passing a “whiskey hollow” on the AT.

⭐️⭐️Mile 1000!! 🌈🌈

1009 miles

After roughly 560 miles, Virginia is behind us. Virginia is the longest state in hiking miles. It takes so long to get across, the feeling you get over time while hiking is called “The Virginia Blues”.

West Virginia is the shortest state in hiking miles. There’s only 4.4 miles of hiking miles in WV.

Shenandoah River

Crossing the Shenandoah River for the last time as we approach Harper’s Ferry, WV.

Harper’s Ferry is one of those few towns on the AT you actually hike through. It’s a really incredible historic park. The town itself is part of the national historic park.

There’s just too much history about this town for me to do justice in the blog. I’ve provided a couple links for info. The Wikipedia link is quite good.

This is a replica of the Provost Office in Harper’s Ferry. The prisoner board is pretty informative.
