Days 18-20, March 29th through 31st, 2024 (Back on The Trail)

We’re back on the AT. Glad to be here after several busy days of packing up our home in Oregon. We’re starting at the Standing Bear hostel, north of the Smoky’s.

Waterboy, CornDog and Warrior Princess are back on the trail

An AT dog went missing in these parts. Her name is Sadie, so if any reader finds her, here is the contact information.

This next section of the AT takes us to Hot Springs, NC. We are constantly moving from North Carolina to Tennessee, as the AT moves along the state lines.

Day 1, Waterboy went north from the National park, while I spent a day hiking south in the park. Some nature and trail photos I collected.

I haven’t seen a gap in two weeks.

Waterboy came across this grave site on the trail. It wasn’t near a road, just kind of out there.

Hot Springs (mile 275) has really embraced the AT, as the trail goes right down their main street (Lance Ave and Bridge Street). Many towns are close to the trail, but this is the first time we’ve followed the trail through town. You’re kind of on parade. Good place to resupply, get a shower, have a meal.

A marker as the trail comes into town.

As I’m posting this photo, I just noticed Madison County imprinted. That’s not Madison County, as in “The Bridges of”(I read that book)? I’ll have to remember to check into that.

Hot Springs is also a great place to take a nap.

We grabbed an Easter Sunday lunch at the Spring Creek Tavern. Thumbs up 👍

As you leave town, you hike along the French Broad River. A great place to take a dunk before continuing your hike.
