Day 30 – The Road to Acton KOA continued. mile 444

Song of the post – “The Lion Sleeps Tonite” by The Tokens (dedicated to the lion you can hear roaring above the KOA)

Not much to report in this stretch of the trail except for the great trail angels and magic we all received at the Mill Creek wayside crossing. A large contingent supporting their hiker friend Duracell was set up, giving out great fare. Iced water, watermelon, chips, candy, OJ.

Duracell’s fan club, and sweet pup, Zoom

Long, hot trek to the KOA from here, but the magic and love energized us. Going forward we really had to ration water.

The KOA was a bit larger than life. Not necessarily in appearance, but in atmosphere and melodrama. There was a lion in a habitat in the hills above the KOA, and we were warned that we might hear roaring during the night (excuse me, but can you please repeat that?). Also there was a domestic dispute between an employee and a significant other that caused a lockdown and the presence of law enforcement on site. I feel the plot of a Twin Peaks type of series developing in my head.

While I’m enjoying these regional festivities at the KOA, Cliff is trudging along and reached mile 500. I feel like I will never catch him.

Is that a festive earring I see? Thank you
Katie Ketcham for pointing that out.
