Days 50 – 53, The Beginning of the Sierras

Song of the post – “Walk this way” by Run DMC and Aerosmith

Falling a little behind on my journaling, as there is no coverage in the mountains. No surprise there, just a little frustrating. I added another battery cell to my pack to use during these extended remote periods, but not really using it. BTW I’m using this Anker recharging battery pack, and I highly recommend. Great product.

Day 1 was great, we hiked about 19 miles. The transition from desert to mountains was wonderful, really elevated our spirits.

Beautiful mountain meadows.
Afternoon siesta
Beneath the bridge
Fun seeing this meadow, it’s in many Youtube videos
Trail lunch, grits with hot water crackers

Days 2 and 3, we left the meadows, and really gained elevation. We stayed between 10,0000 and 11,000 ft for most of the stretch.

Morning water stop, first of many alpine lakes
A prank? Mountain art? An Omen?

Day 3 we entered Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, another milestone. And the elevation continues its upward trajectory, whew this pack is heavy.

The views are incredible, like right off those nature calendars.

Frozen lake as we approach Forester Pass

The above shot is from Forester Pass. At 13200 ft, it is the highest point on the PCT. We crossed it on our 4th day in the Sierras, on our hike down to Independence to resupply and meet Char Char. This was a 22 mile day, 12 hrs of hiking. The views helped alleviate the fatigue.

Hike down from Forester pass, the other side in the sun.
We came over that
