We said goodbye to San Diego, had a great shuttle ride to the southern PCT terminus. Anybody ever wants to tackle this hike, or part of it, reach out to our new friend Paul at Southern Terminus Shuttles. Great ride, he’s a hiker and offers great advice. And you can charge you electric devices during the trip (so important)
We took the obligatory photos at the monument and sticking our hands into Mexico, and started hiking by 11am.
Like a couple of tourist, we had to get photos of all the landmarks we saw on Youtube videos, while preparing for this trip. Those are the 1 mile marker and the railroad crossing sign telling us we only hiked 3 miles and have so much more to do.
Southern California, at least this section, is really spectacular. Very green, amazing vistas, and lots of wildflowers. It made for a really nice day of hiking.
We made camp at mile 11.4. There were 3 other hikers camped near us, all three female and all solo hikers. Also, 2 of the 3 were European. As a matter of fact, most of the hikers we’ve met so far have been European.
Camp was comfortable, and dinner was rather exotic. We had freeze dried curry, and it was great. But most anything would taste pretty good after hiking with a 30 lb pack today.
There’s a lot of music on the trail. You may hear it from another hiker, on local radio, at camp, in the distance not sure where its coming from. I’m going to share a little of that in the blog with each post. I encourage you to check it out, you might discover something new or rediscover a forgotten favorite.
